Critic Reviews for Ramy Season 2

All Critics (29) | Top Critics (15)

RAMY brings a new perspective to the screen as it explores the challenges of what it's like being caught between a Muslim community that thinks life is a moral test and a millennial generation that thinks life has no consequences.

With a formidable mix of surrealism and humor, Youssef explores the complexities of being a religious millennial man.

It's a smarter, better show for being so hard on Ramy, in part because it knows him well enough to not let the whole story rest on one young millennial's shoulders.

Unique and rather wonderful.

Aug 3, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Season 2 is moving and profane. Stupid funny, then scary serious. Topical and evergreen. Hyperspecific with wide appeal.

May 28, 2020 | Full Review…

For everyone else, though, Ramy is most interesting and most arresting in the way it tells separate stories, finding flaws and humor and humanity for its minor characters in ways it often struggles to do for its main character.

Even one great supporting performance, itself overcoming a relatively one-note character, doesn't make the season any less disappointing.

May 28, 2020 | Rating: 5.9/10 | Full Review…

The show is a wonderful celebration of faith and trying to be a better person. Even with some miscalculations along the way, the second season is on par with the first and continues to be a powerful comedy that deserves your attention.

Ramy is still one of the freshest, thought-provoking comedies of the streaming era.

"Ramy" holds a strong footing as a deep dive into a rarely represented community, while parsing through the complexities of what it means to be a good Muslim man.

One of the many strengths... is how its star and creator widens the focus beyond its eponymous character's own journey to reveal the challenges of assimilation for the rest of his family, each of whom takes center stage in impactful episodes of their own.

Season two is moving, heartbreaking, and relevant. Just the right combination of what a perfect season looks like.

Almost one layer comedy but not as smart as the first.

I liked the second season but not as much as Season 1. Ramy is known for being unique because it is a comedy about a Muslim-American family and Ramy, the main character, wrestling with his desire to to be a good Muslim. While it may be true that we rarely see American-Muslim characters in television comedies, I actually think it has become rare to show people wrestling with deep issues of faith anymore on television at all. Ramy is very much about the main characters spiritual journey and wanting to be true to his religion, but he constantly seems unable to refrain from sex and is often impulsive in general. There is an episode about a gay, Muslim character on the show that I thought was outstanding. It helped us understand the deep shame some men of an older generation and from religious communities still experience about their sexuality and how it impacts who they become as people. The one thing that bothered me about Season 2 is that I thought Ramy's relationship with one of the other main characters, a women who he marries, is under-developed and I especially thought the actions of his fiance and bride were not believable. I never believed they fell in love with each other at all or even was convinced that they thought their feelings were deep enough to marry. I also had trouble the way his relationship with his female cousin was underdeveloped and I thought her character's action just did not feel believable to me either. I think he needs to work on the development of his female characters more, especially his romantic partners. But I still really like and recommend this show. There were times in both Season One and Season Two that I thought the show was poetic in a way that we rarely see in television, and I hope there is a Season 3.

The first season was brilliant, moving, and often unexpectedly hilarious. This second season has been a huge letdown. While it still has highlights. by and large it's a lazy, clumsily-written rehash of the first season's "greatest hits." This show always had a lot to say, but it almost always managed to say it in a subtle, quietly intriguing way; this season just telegraphs whatever you're supposed to think about issue X, Y, or Z, and it's much less effective. Perhaps most surprisingly - this season is way less funny! I'm surprised to see so many glowing reviews, there has been a tremendous drop in quality.

    Heartfelt, dark, and outstanding.

Ramy is so close to my heart cause it really portray our lives, young Muslims end of 20s from Arabic origins living in the west. Trying to stick to our religion and culture while emerging in western life with all its pros and cons. It is really twisted and dramatic with high complexity this season. I thank Ramy Youssef for such spectacular masterpiece.

An amazing look into another world for me. My eyes were really opened to some things I didn't know and my heart is crying for more. This is really a great show.
