Harley Quinn: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Harley Quinn

Critics Consensus

A strong voice cast and an even stronger grasp of what makes its titular antiheroine so beloved make Harley Quinn a violently delightful -- and surprisingly insightful -- addition to the DC animated universe.

Critic Reviews for Harley Quinn Season 1

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (4)

The series plays like a carnival ride -- something that's fun and exciting the first time, and tiring and a little nausea-inducing by the time you reach the 13th, which happens to be how many episodes were made for the first season.

The cast at large is key to Harley Quinn's success. Harley screeches so much I actually became worried for Cuoco's vocal cords, but the shrieking nonetheless remains essential to Harley's personal development.

Dec 2, 2019 | Full Review…

It uses profoundly silly plots to address serious real-world issues and tells surprisingly sweet stories that are utterly soaked in cartoon gore.

Dec 2, 2019 | Full Review…

There's an edgelord quality to every episode that becomes tiring after a while, but, to the show's credit, Harley Quinn at least approaches its extreme content with a wry smile, if not a knowing wink.

Dec 3, 2019 | Full Review…

I just don't think this show has the power right now to keep audiences coming back week after week for more. For now, the series is a good background show for when you want a laugh while doing other things.

Dec 2, 2019 | Full Review…

Ultimately, Harley Quinn might be an economical watch, but it feels expansive, partially because the supporting cast pops with every shade of personality.

Dec 2, 2019 | Full Review…

The series does a great job in proving something that all us Harley fans have known since her inception: Harley Quinn is much more than her relationship with Joker.

Dec 8, 2019 | Full Review…

Kaley Cuoco is a revelation.

Dec 30, 2019 | Full Review…

Harley Quinn is just a treat. It feels like visiting Gotham from her singularly-psycho perspective, with all the colorful action and doofy humor that entails.

Dec 2, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's close to being excessive, but it never quite crosses that line.

Dec 3, 2019 | Full Review…

For DC fans to animation lovers, this is the perfect show for you. Prepare for utter insanity from start to finish, and expect to be shocked and offended at every turn.

Dec 1, 2019 | Full Review…

Harley Quinn has the right combination of satire, character-driven humor and satisfying story elements to make it one of the funniest shows we've seen in 2019.

I was already a huge fan of Harley Quinn, but now I think she may be my favorite DC character and that is partially do to this show. Not only is it hilarious, but it also has incredible character development and dynamics.

Oh my! The show begins a bit slow. At first i had the impression it's gonna be just a slightly grittier and darker girl-power animated series. After watching the first season I can confirm tat it was... AND SO MUCH MORE! All the characters are very well fleshed-out. They all have a story to tell and most of it helps the plot to develop. Possibly the best incarnation of the Joker - evil, mischievous, manic and mad as a (if i may) bat! Harley's relationship with him is as messed up as it can be, and her relationship with Ivy is as beautiful as Batman's with Robin. Speaking of Batman, his decision making in the last two episodes had me picking my jaw of the floor. The tone of the series is wonderfully dark. Plenty of blood and violence to go around. The before mentioned 'girl power' element is in no way over the top, nor does it overwhelm the main plot (which at first, to my mistake, seemed very loose and not as important as individual episodes). Mid -season it grabs you by the neck and spins you in in a couple of episodes. All in all - in my humble opinion this might be a powerful rival (in terms of quality) to the classic 'Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1995).

From Doom Patrol to Swamp Thing to Young Justice: Outsiders, DC Universe knocks it out of the park again with the animated dark comedy in Harley Quinn. PROS This is Dc's first major attempt at a dark comedy in animation and it's without a doubt, one of their best works; every aspect is crafted with an immense amount of care. The cast had me sold on the show by the end of the pilot and continued to do so with the introduction of every new character. A tip of the hat to the writers who crafted a meaningful and memorable narrative that stayed true to its source material while throwing an ingenious twist on our beloved characters. Each voice actor provided outstandingly entertaining performances that all managed to provide a number of laughs thanks to the well-written humor. I haven't laughed this hard in with any superhero content, period. CONS My biggest concern however was how the show would go about its humor. Most of the jokes were well-written, but some just didn't click in both their execution and writing. Additionally, some of the violent scenes later into the season felt a bit overdone and came off as a bit distasteful. One of those scenes was faithful to a specific character, but still felt a bit much. CONCLUSION Harley Quinn continues DC Universe hot streak and expands their talent into the genre of comedy. With an exceptional characterization, a hugely faithful and entertaining narrative, and surprisingly well- crafted humor, it's a show that will appeal to many comic book fans. While some of the violence is overdone and some of the jokes don't land, the show still proves to be an absolute delight.

In this superhero-fatigued world, I would never pay for a subscription to "DC Universe". Especially not when the DC comics haven't managed to rack up too many successes in their many attempts at transitioning to movie and television screens. There's simply not anywhere near enough good DC content to pay a monthly fee for it, unless that fee was a just buck or two, and there are too many better streamers competing. I watched the first episode of "Harley Quinn" free on cable, and that's all I will get to see for now. It stacked up pretty well against the Harley Quinn scenes in "Suicide Squad", and approached the likability of that greatest of all DC screen portrayals, "Batman the Animated Series". Kaley Cuoco brought an appropriately manic level of energy to the portrayal, no problem there. And just like in BTAS, the story in the first episode was comic-book sized. Not another city-flattening, eardrum-smashing battle to save the world from some mega-baddy armed with a magic all-powerful orb yet again (yawn) but more on the scale of robbing a jewelry store or a bank. If/when DC Universe fails and gets merged with a more successful content provider (e.g. Disney+/Marvel/Star Wars/Pixar) making it worth subscribing, I'll look forward to catching up with the rest of Harley's adventures.

Most of the jokes remind me of Tom Green and Vince Vaughn skits. Though this series proves that if you take enough shots you will hit sometimes.

Harley Quinn is entertaining and exhilarating. Looking for an adult animation to watch while Rick and Morty is unavailable, this is it.

You can really tell they just wanted to have loads of fun with this show and for the most part they do. I must say, the highlights for me have to be clay face & psycho. Fantastic performances from the entire cast (Alan tudyk is a stand out, naturally)
